Dyeing is the process of adding colour to textiles such as fibres, yarns and fabrics. It is an old art that has been practiced by mankind for thousands of years. The dyeing process is based on absorption and diffusion. Absorption refers to the transfer of dyes from an aqueous solution to the fabric surface, whereas diffusion refers to the dyes being disseminated into the fibres. Of course, temperature and other governing factors have an important influence. The dyeing can be done by hand or by machine. Furthermore, different dyes are utilised for different types of fabric.
